Canadian Captain Frank Dancevic: We have a really bright future

Canadian Davis Cup Team Captain Frank Dancevic remains excited and optimistic about the future of Canadian tennis despite the loss suffered to Spain in the final of the inaugural Davis Cup Finals.

Before the event, Canada wasn't considered a top favorite to win it all at Caja Magica in Madrid but the young Canadian team showed great mental strength and character throughout the week to make a deep run.

Unfortunately for the Canadians, they couldn't pull out another big win when it mattered most as Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut beat Felix Auger-Aliassime  in the opening tie, before Rafael Nadal defeated Denis Shapovalov in the second tie to seal the title.

Shapovalov, 20, and 19-year-old Auger-Aliassime have broken into the top-20 this year and many believe the two have the potential to win multiple Grand Slams in the future and reach the very top of the rankings.

"Tennis is really hot right now in Canada,” Dancevic said, per the Davis Cup. “We're known as a hockey nation. With all of the results that these guys have had, you know, starting with even Vasek, Milos [Raonic], and then these young guys Felix and Denis coming up and playing at such a high level, it's brought a lot of attention to the game of tennis. And Bianca [Andreescu] as well, winning the US Open. And now we're in the finals here.

“It's great for our sport. It's really wonderful to see this young generation is playing so well. We have a really bright future ahead of us, and it's bringing a lot of kids in clubs and playing. Our federation has been great at getting things going in the past decade. It's shown, and it's made a big difference in what we've done."
