Caujolle recalls his toughest time as TD involving Federer, Nadal

In an interview, Jean-Francois Caujolle recalled one of his toughest moments as Paris Masters' Tournament Director. Caujolle, who was in charge of this role from 2007 to 2011, said: "When I was in Paris Bercy, I announced that Nadal and Federer would not play in the quarter-finals. Or when Nadal decided to withdraw in 2010..."

Caujolle is now the Marseille Open's Tournament Director and an organizer of the Lyon Open. On Lyon, he added: "It has a big future. We will have to choose between indoor and outdoor tournament in the future but we will stay outdoor."

Caujolle also shared that he would have liked to bring Matteo Berrettini to Marseille in 2020, but he has no money left to pay additional appearance fees: "The budget depends on rankings and results, Medvedev is No. 4, Tsitsipas No. 6, Shapovalov and Goffin are top 15 players and Khachanov top 20. It's already a lot."

On why Gael Monfils will not play in the 2020 edition, Caujolle added: "He played a lot of times in Marseille but he never did well. Last year he won in Rotterdam and announced the last-minute withdrawal in Marseille. Then he went to Dubai straight and he played there... But if it changes, we may give him a wild card invitation. I am not against him at all."

Asked if they have tried to bring Kei Nishikori, Caujolle concluded: "We have tried, last year we were quite close and he just played in Rotterdam. This year we spoke with his agent again but he is playing in the United States. He is also injured."
