Dominic Thiem would never buy a Ferrari, says father

Dominic Thiem reached the 20 million career prize money height by winning the Vienna's Erste Bank Open defeating Diego Schwartzman in a three-set final. Speaking to Krone Zeitung, Thiem's father Wolfgang said his son is rational when it comes to spend money. "That's not so important for him. He would never buy a Ferrari, for example. Or a golden watch. That's off discussion."

On Thiem as a kid, Wolfgang added: "He always wanted to hit a ball. It doesn't matter if football, table tennis or tennis ball. Ball was the main thing. For him it was just about enjoying. Only a game. And he understood, I think, very late, that this game suddenly became his work."

Wolfgang finally spoke about Dominic's improvements: "He always says he never felt so well. That's definitely given by the fact that it was more strange than usual as he had to stop in August due to a illness. He is taking more responsabilities. Gunter Bresnik was the boss. Now Dominic is the boss of the team. He decides what to do. It definitely made him more mature and responsible."

Dominic spoke about the game conditions at the ATP Finals: "It's pretty fast, yeah. It's similar to Bercy, which was also fast. But, I mean, there are not only disadvantages for me on this kind of court. Also I love to hit my backhand in a comfortable hit, and it's not nice for me to hit it on clay or on a slower hard court if it's bouncing too high, because it's also probably the most effective if it's bouncing low, like here. So there are also some advantages for me on these fast courts. Today I was returning and serving very good, and that's, as I said, the two most important shots indoors and on a fast surface."
