Karolina Pliskova Hires Daniel Vallverdu as New Coach
Women's World No. 2 tennis player Karolina Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, has hired Britain's Daniel Vallverdu as her new coach. Pliskova recently announced that she had parted ways with former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, of Spain, after the WTA Finals where she reached the semi-finals, saying it was time to move forward. Martinez has now been appointed as coach by fellow Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.
Pliskova hopes that Vallverdu will help her win her first Grand Slam singles title. She has reached one Grand Slam final in her career so far - the 2016 US Open where she lost to German Angelique Kerber. Pliskova won 4 WTA titles this year - taking her total career singles titles to 15.
The Brit has worked with Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov, Stanislas Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro in the past.
The 33-year-old Vallverdu tried to make it on the professional circuit and reached No. 727 in the rankings in 2005. During his work with Murray, the Scot won his first Olympic Gold medal in 2012 (Vallverdú was the head coach for the British Olympic tennis team), and two Grand Slam wins: the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon when Vallverdu worked alongside Ivan Lendl.
Vallverdu was also voted by the body of ATP coaches to act as the Coaches representative in the ATP Player Council in 2018.
