Kiki Bertens Unhappy about being overlooked for Dutch Sportswoman of 2019

Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens says she was surprised that she was not on the shortlist for the Dutch Sportswoman of the Year which were recently announced.

According to AD, Bertens says, "I don't like that at all, that is well known. I won a Premier 5 tournament in Madrid, the first Dutch one. I became number 4 in the world, also the first one. And that in a global sport. But apparently you have to win a grand slam to be nominated. Take last year: how is it possible that a coach is nominated, but the athlete he coaches is not? Raemon really deserved it, but wasn't that strange? Anyway, I have an extra night on the couch. I don't know if I'll go and see. ”

The professional jury will select the nominations from the shortlists, which will be announced on 1 December. The vote takes place on Wednesday, December 18. Top athletes, national coaches and professional jury members can vote for the award.

The women who were nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year 2019 were  • Sifan Hassan, athletics • Lara van Ruijven, short track • Irene Schouten, long track speed skating • Suzanne Schulting, short track • Annemiek van Vleuten, road cycling • Kirsten Wild, track cycling • Ireen Wüst, long track speed skating

Bertens ended the tennis season as World No. 9 after winning 2 WTA titles this year and more than $4 million in career prize money. She was ranked as high as No. 4 in May 2019. Bertens was an alternate at the season-ending WTA Finals and she got in to the tournament when Naomi Osaka withdrew. Bertens got a chance to play two matches although she did not qualify for the semi-finals - retiring against Swiss Belinda Bencic and then beating World No. 1 Ash Barty.
