Rafael Nadal explains what led to his shock Paris Masters withdrawal
Spanish tennis superstar Rafael Nadal has revealed that an abdominal injury sustained during his pre-match warm-up led to his unfortunate withdrawal from his Paris Masters semifinal clash.
Nadal's sudden withdrawal left everyone stunned as the Parisian crowd didn't hide its big disappointment when it was announced just moments before the start of the match that the second-seeded Spaniard had given a walkover to rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov.
“In one of the last serves of the warmups, I felt something in the abdominal," Nadal later revealed in his press conference, per the tournament's Twitter account.
The 33-year-old Spaniard didn't drop a single set an route to the Paris semifinal as he handed straight-set defeats to Adrian Mannarino, Stan Wawrinka and Jo Wilfried in his three matches played at the tournament.
"For the rest of the week the things have been positive...I enjoyed a lot playing here in Bercy," Nadal insisted.
Nadal, who has never won it all at the Nitto ATP Finals, remains optimistic that he will be ready for the prestigious season-ending event, which will be held in London from November 10-17.
"Hopefully things will be better. I hope to be ready for London. That's the biggest goal now. But as I said before, I can't guarantee anything because just happened today," Nadal said.
