Raven Klaasen: Playing first match at ATP Finals is nerve-wracking
South-African Raven Klaasen admitted that playing the opening match at the Nitto ATP Finals wasn't easy but he and his partner Michael Venus were happy to make a perfect start to their campaign.
Klaasen and Venus claimed a break in each set and saved all four break points they faced en route to handing a 6-3 6-4 defeat to American Rajeev Ram and home favorite Joe Salisbury at The O2 Arena.
"We'll take that every day of the week," Klaasen said after the match, per the Nitto ATP Finals website. "To be the first match of the Finals is a bit nerve-racking and to get off to a good start certainly puts our minds at ease for the rest of the tournament."
Klaasen and Venus saved two break points in the opening game of the match and two more when they were serving for the first set in the ninth game.
"They had two [break points] in the first game of the match. On the last one, [Ram] missed the ball by maybe an inch or so. It was really close. If they got that point, we could have been standing here with a different result today," Venus said.
