Roger Federer Nominated for Swiss Male Athlete of the Year

Tennis - Roger Federer has been nominated for the Swiss Male Athlete of the Year Award back in his native Switzerland. The Swiss legend enjoyed a great season - although he did not win any of the Grand Slams - he reached the final of the Wimbledon Championships in July - going down to Novak Djokovic in five sets after having two match points. He ended the season ranked No. 3 in the world, behind Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The 38-year-old won 4 ATP titles in 2019 - Dubai, Miami, Halle and Basel - his hometown event for the record 10th time. Federer's win in Halle was also the 10th time that he won at that tournament. He has now won 103 ATP titles in his career, six short of the all-time record held by Jimmy Connors.

The awards will be announced on December 15th. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who continues to surprise many with his play at the age of 38, has won the award seven times in the past - most recently in 2017. Federer also won the award in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2014. Federer has said that he would continue to play next year and has planned to play until the Olympics in Tokyo and added that he would then take a call on whether he would extend his career into 2021.

Last year, the award went to Nino Schurter. the cross Swiss cross-country cyclist who races for the SCOTT-SRAM MTB Racing Team.

The winner of the award is now chosen by Swiss journalists and television viewers.
