Bouchard on Necker Cup: “It’s party, tennis, beach… all my favourite things”

Eugenie Bouchard, a Wimbledon finalist in 2014, previewed the upcoming Necker Cup, a doubles pro-amateur tennis tournament held on Sir Richard Branson’s private island, and she couldn’t be more excited about it.

“It’s Richard Branson’s private island, so you can literally cannot get more exclusive or luxurious than that. And there are some amazing people there. Bjorn Borg showed up, we had a lot of amazing pros and then...the amateurs...We end up, all, becoming friends, and we have like this Necker bond that will just unite us forever. It’s a party, it’s tennis, it’s beach, all my favorite things in one.”, said Bouchard for OutsideTheBall.com.

To explain a little bit, in the Necker Cup, tennis legends are paired with amateurs, but that is quite unfair. Therefore, amateur players usually start with a handicap to make things more interesting.

The event will take place in one of the Carribean islands and as business magnate Richard Branson is known for his philanthropic deeds, the tournament aims to raise funds for different charities. The last one was about helping local people recover after hurricane Irma had hit.

“It was an emotional year because it was the first year back after hurricane Irma basically destroyed the whole island, so a lot of the charity was going to relief efforts to rebuild and as well to the National Tennis Foundation, which is an amazing organization, a lot of kids were there, so we got to speak with them. I just love giving back.”, concluded Bouchard.

Until now, the following players have confirmed their presence at Necker Cup: Rod Laver, Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Vasek Pospisil, Nick Monroe, Tommy Haas, Jack Sock, Radek Stepanek, Daniel Nestor, Gigi Fernandez, Johan Kriek, Bradley Klahn, Sabine Lisicki, Carol Zhao and Gaby Dabrowski.
