Simona Halep Will Not Play in Fed Cup Next Year

Romania's Simona Halep will not participate in the Fed Cup tournament next year as she does not like the new format and wants to focus on the Olympic Games instead, says Ion Tiriac.

Tiriac says, "Simona told me that she does not want to come to the Fed Cup because she is focusing on the Olympics."

Romania is playing Russia in the qualifying tie for the Fed Cup - the winner of the tie will advance to the Fed Cup Finals which are to be held in Budapest in April next year. The dates are scheduled from April 14 to April 19. The Romania and Russia tie will take place in Cluj-Napoca in the Multipurpose Hall on February 7 and 8 next year. Romania had reached the semi-finals of the Fed Cup event this year.

The winner will be part of the 12 teams that participate in the newly formatted Fed Cup finals tournament. Halep had earlier said she was not excited about playing in the new format of the event. She had quoted, "I like the way Fed Cup is now. Playing at home and away is the nicest feeling. If Fed Cup changes, I won't play because I like it now."

The Olympics are scheduled to take place between July 24 and August 9 next year and will take place in Tokyo. Halep had skipped the previous edition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio in 2016.

Halep is currently ranked No. 4 in the world and besides Halep, Romania have two other players in the Top 100 of the WTA world rankings - Sorana Cirstea (ranked no. 74) and Irina Begu (ranked No.100).
