Buenos Aires shares struggles in bringing Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic

In an interview as quoted by La Nacion Martin Hughes, Tennium Executive Director, spoke about the Argentina Open that will take place in Buenos Aires in February. Hughes said: "We are consistently in contact with the players seeing what we can do. We have a packed stadium for Schwartzman. People appreciate the good tennis. It would be good to have icons like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, but today it's difficult to reach an agreement with this kind of stadiums and the difficulties you have in Argentina. All the appearance fees are in dollars and here nothing can be sold in dollars. But there is still a very good tennis from Monday to Sunday. There can always be a surprise."

The Tournament Director Martin Jaite added: "We start speaking with the players for the following year once the tournament ends. But there are tournaments that engage a player for three years and when you speak to them they say no because they are already committed. We compete with a tournament like Rotterdam (an ATP 500) that makes long-term agreements."

On the local support they get, Jaite concluded: "We basically have been supported by the national Government for 12 years. Now next week there will be new authorities and we think we will be supported by the national Government again, because it's a tournament that gets broadcasted in more than 80 countries and any government is interested at supporting one of the few events in Argentina that has been happening for 20 years with no breaks."
