Caroline Garcia Invests in new WTA Event in Lyon
France's Caroline Garcia has decided to sponsor the new WTA tournament that is being held in Lyon, France from 2nd to 8th March 2020. Garcia herself hails from the region of Lyon and is currently the top-ranked Frenchwoman on the WTA Tour.
The tournament will be held for the first time in 2020 and will be held indoors.
Speaking to the LyonCapitale website, Garcia says, "I know that it is not common to see a player in activity invest in a tournament, but for me, it is a great accomplishment and real pride. It's really something that was close to my heart. I did all my training here, the territory has brought me a lot, I really wanted to give back to others and share with them this passion for tennis. Doing it in Lyon was very important. I participated financially in the acquisition this week. For the rest, there is a team in place who will manage all this daily with Pascal Biojout, who will be the tournament director. "
The 26-year-old Garcia is currently ranked No. 46 in the world and was part of the French team that won the Fed Cup finals earlier this month. She was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world last September. This year, she won 1 WTA title, taking her career total tally to 7 WTA singles titles and her overall career prize money to $10 million. In doubles, she has been a former World No. 2 but has chosen to focus on singles more in recent times, taking her doubles ranking down to No. 249.
