Daniil Medvedev and Marat Safin speak highly of each other
Russian tennis superstar Daniil Medvedev is excited to be a part of the Russian team that will be led by captain Marat Safin at the inaugural ATP Cup.
Safin, a former two-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 1, was the idol to many younger Russian players who are now trying to leave their mark on the Tour.
"Everybody loves Marat, on and off the court. He's one of the legends of our sport so you can only learn from him," world No. 5 Medvedev told the ATP Cup.
"All Russian kids, they were doing two things -- backhand on the jump and smashing rackets."
Medvedev, who made nine finals this year and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world, is considered the future Grand Slam champion and world No. 1.
"We met this year, only. (Medvedev) looks (like a) good person, down to earth... Plays not bad tennis. I'm happy to be (the) captain," Safin told the ATP Cup.
Russia was drawn in Group D with the United States, Italy and Norway.
