Matteo Berrettini on him and Fabio Fognini breaking into top-10
Rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini was extremely happy for both himself and Fabio Fognini after the two broke into the top-10 this year.
Berrettini, who enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Tour in 2019, broke into the top-10 at the end of November when he rose No. 9 on the rankings list.
A week later, the 23-year-old achieved a career-high ranking when he climbed up to No. 8 in the world.
On the other side, Fognini debuted in the top-10 in June -- just two months after claiming his maiden Masters title in Monte Carlo.
Before this season, Italy had only two top-10 players as Adriano Panatta and Corrado Barazzutti made the top-10 more then four decades ago.
"It is crazy, because we had to wait a lot," Berrettini told the ATP Cup. “Fabio won a crazy tournament [in Monte-Carlo], he was playing so good. He was looking for this achievement a bit longer than me, he [has had] a really great career. After winning an ATP Masters 1000 [title], the Top 10 is the next step, so I was happy for him and now I am super proud of myself."
