Rafael Nadal's coach Francis Roig spoke about if the 33-year-old can be considered as the greatest player ever. Roig said: "It's very difficult to guess who is the better player but as a sportsman, he is among the best in the world, without a doubt. Rafa is great for everything he does and everything he does on the court. When he retires he will end up being one of the greatest in the world sports. What he did this year was amazing. He had no desire to practice, disappointed and without energy. In the Barcelona tournament he hit the rock bottom, but all of a sudden, after losing to Dominic Thiem in the semifinals, he changed. He defeated Novak Djokovic in Rome and he felt capable of everything again.
"Rafa reinvented himself. He discovered new things and enjoying tennis. He has a better serve, a backhand that opens more the court, he improved the slice backhand and I still think he has more things to improve. His ability training is brutal. Until he doesn't achieve what he wants, he doesn't get tired."
Toni Nadal said: "The pain is the only thing that influences Rafael's motivation. Working to improve. That's the only thing that depends on us."
Spain's Davis Cup team captain Sergi Bruguera said: "For me, he is the best. He is one Grand Slam away from Federer, but who has 12 French Opens or five Davis Cups and two gold Olympics, besides unbreakable records? He is the best. Tennis-wise he evolved in an unbelievable way. He does everything very well and he is also a very good person, humble and respectful."
