Torben Beltz: Being Positive and Trust are Important Factors for Success

Torben Beltz, the coach who guided German Angelique Kerber to two Grand Slam titles in 2016 while working with her for more than a decade, says that the secret to a good partnership is to remain positive and have trust in one another.

According to Tennisnet, Beltz, who is now coaching Croatian Donna Vekic for the past couple of seasons, says, "It's just important to stay positive. In tennis, there is a new challenge every week, a new way to play well. Being positive and focused - these are the two most important qualities for him as a coach. And to carry out intensive training even if the player does not feel well. I have no problem with anyone. I have many good friends on the tour. See each other every week, go and even play golf together or have a drink."

During Beltz's stint with Vekic, the Croatian has moved from the outside the Top 50 to No. 19 in the world rankings, which is a career-high for the Croatian. The success has resulted in Beltz getting nominated for Coach of the Year by the WTA as well this year where he will compete against Sylvain Bruneau, the coach of Bianca Andreescu and Craig Tyzzer, the coach of Ash Barty. "The player must trust the coach, believe in him, what he says or trains. If my player plays well and loses anyway, that hurts me a lot. We trainers have tough days then. We then try to stay positive and continue working the next day, and the week after that we have a chance to do better."
