Roger Federer speaks highly of Tennys Sandgren ahead of Australian Open clash
No. 3 seed Roger Federer insists he won't be taking world No. 100 Tennys Sandgren for granted when they meet in the Australian Open quarterfinal.
Federer, a six-time Australian Open champion, came from a set down in his round-of-16 match against Marton Fucsovics as he beat the Hungarian 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2.
"I wonder why he (Sandgren) is not ranked higher, to be honest. Every time I see him play I feel like he plays very well. He has got a lot stuff in his game that is deserving of being higher (ranked). I don't know if he has been injured or not in the last season to be honest so I didn't follow him that closely," Federer told reporters after beating Fucsovics.
Former world No. 41 Sandgren surprised No. 12 seed Fabio Fognini 7-6 (5) 7-5 6-7 (2) 6-4 to set up his first-ever meeting against Federer.
"I'm looking forward to that match because I have seen him play a lot but never played him," Federer added.
"It was impressive how he was competing (against Fognini) and I'm looking forward to a tough one."
