Jamie Murray's Colombia Trip in December Had Him Worried Because...
Britain's Jamie Murray says that he ate beef in Colombia during a trip in December and when the news of World No. 1 doubles star Robert Farah testing positive came out, he was stressed that he may also fail a drug test, according to The Mirror.
Farah, who was forced to pull out of the Australian Open due to his positive drug test, blamed eating contaminated meat in Colombia for his positive test and is now trying to clear his name. As per his defence, Farah stated that the Colombian Olympic Committee had warned athletes in 2018 that they were at the risk of testing positives due to the levels of steroids frequently found in meat in the country.
Murray, whose wife is also from Colombia, said he was there in December to visit her family and also ate beef at some family gatherings. "It is funny because I went to Colombia in December and got tested three days later when I was in Miami. I ate beef at family barbecues and stuff. So when his news came out, I was a bit stressed about what my test would be but I passed it and I was ok.”
Speaking on Farah, Murray said, “Obviously it is a shock. For me personally, I don't believe, him especially, were taking things to improve performance because we get tested all the time, he was already No.1 in the world. That was locked up and he had already won two Slams at that moment. Why would you start taking something. If you are running 100m, then fair enough, or if you are a cyclist or a rower, but our skills sets are so varied in terms of what people can do to be successful on a tennis court.”
Murray and partner Neal Skupski were beaten at the Australian Open men's doubles event on Saturday by Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey 4-6 7-6 7-6. Murray said he was disappointed to lose such a close match. "Obviously disappointed to lose. We were a bit unlucky at the end the way it played out but we had our chances at the start of the third set. They started serving huge serves.”
