2018 runner-up Sam Querrey withdraws from New York Open

American tennis star Sam Querrey, 32, has withdrawn from next week's New York Open.

The American participated in the first two editions of New York and was planning to make his third consecutive appearance at the event this February.

Querrey, ranked at No. 40, enjoyed success in each of his two campaigns in New York but he has yet to win a title at the event.

Querrey fell just short of winning the inaugural New York Open title in 2018 as he finished runner-up in the final to Kevin Anderson.

Back then, the 32-year-old home favorite won the opening set before Anderson stormed back to win 4-6 6-3 7-6 (1).

Last year, the American also had a deep run in New York as he made the semifinal before losing to Canadian Brayden Schnur.

Querrey last played at the Australian Open, where he was beaten in the third round by fellow compatriot Tennys Sandgren.

Meanwhile, a place in the New York main draw has opened for Germany's Dominik Koepfer following the withdrawal of Querrey.

Koepfer, ranked at No. 92 in the world, has no previous appearances at the New York Open.
