ATP New York: Jason Jung downs Kevin Anderson. Edmund, Norrie, Thompson advance

Qualifier Jason Jung is through to the second round in New York following a 7-6, 6-4 triumph over the inaugural champion Kevin Anderson in an hour and 28 minutes. Both players struggled to find the first serve and it was Jung who drew more from it, dropping ten points in 1 service games and getting broken only once. On the other hand, Kevin blasted 17 aces and it wasn't enough to keep him safe, playing against five break chances and suffering two breaks to finish his campaign at the first obstacle. Hitting the zone right from the start, Jason sailed through his service games in the opener, creating break chances in games six and eight that Kevin saved with some powerful shotmaking, reaching the tie break where Jung fended off a set point with a perfect backhand crosscourt winner, moving 7-6 up with a service winner and wrapping up the set following a costly double fault from the South African.

Anderson broke in the second game of the second set when his rival sprayed a forehand error, only to suffer a break at love in the very next game that took the momentum away from him instantly. Jason barely lost a point behind the initial shot in the rest of the set, earning a break at 3-3 thanks to a forehand mistake from Kevin and sealing the deal with four service winners in game ten for the place in the second round. In the clash between a former and current college player, Cameron Norrie ousted Brian Shi 7-5, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes. The Briton got broken twice but that wasn't enough for the American to cause an upset, losing almost half of the points in his games and suffering five breaks overall to propel Cameron through. Shi led 3-0 and 4-2 in the first set, only to drop five of the next six games as Norrie regained composure to earn breaks in games seven and 11, stealing the opener 7-5.

The better-ranked player raced towards the finish line in set number two, serving well and breaking Shi in games five and nine to kick off the campaign in style. Another Briton had a nice day at the office, with the 8th seed Kyle Edmund beating Yasutaka Uchiyama 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes. Serving at only 49%, Kyle dominated with the first serve and erased five out of six break chances offered to the Japanese, scoring three breaks to finish the job in straight sets and advance into the last 16. Edmund had to wait for the 12th game to grab a break in the opener, producing another one at 5-4 in set number two to prevail and avoid spending more time on the court against a persistent rival who gave his best to stay in touch.

In another clash of former college players, Dominik Koepher took down the last year's finalist Brayden Schnur 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 16 minutes, taking more than of the return points for five breaks from 14 opportunities. The Canadian did take rival's serve three times but that couldn't keep him safe, losing eight of the last 11 games to push the German through and not repeating what he did in New York 12 months ago. Soonwoo Kwon, Paolo Lorenzi, Yoshihito Nishioka and Jordan Thompson also scored first-round victories to set the second-round clashes that start from Wednesday.
