Boris Becker compares Andy Murray's injury to Roger Federer

After winning the title in Antwerp last year, Andy Murray was injured again during the Davis Cup finals in Madrid. The three-time Grand Slam champion has missed the ATP Cup and the Australian Open and could return directly to the grass season.

At the end of November 2019, a television documentary, Andy Murray: Resurfacing, was released on the Amazon Prime platform, detailing Murray's various attempts to overcome his hip injury over a two-year period from his defeat at Wimbledon in 2017 to his doubles victory at Queen's Club in 2019.

Speaking at the Laureus Sports Awards in Berlin, Boris Becker expressed his thoughts on Murray: “It always starts with the right mentality but obviously his problems have been physical, with the hip surgery you don’t mess around. He’s a tough cookie and he will find a way to come back" - he said. Asked if Murray could copy Roger Federer, Becker added: “Federer was not that seriously injured. As long as he believes, wants to come back and get physically back to 100 per cent, once he’s got the racket in his hand, on a good day he can beat anyone.”

Meanwhile, John Newcombe spoke about Murray: "I don't see how Andy Murray can ever get back to being the player he was given his age and the chronic nature of his hip injury,” he told Herald and Times Sport. At his age, it takes longer to recover so I don't believe he can win more Grand Slam tournaments and compete consistently with the likes of Djokovic, Nadal, and even Federer who is in the twilight of his career. I predicted about ten years ago that Andy would retire having won two or three majors and he's done exactly that. But he suffered a bad injury and at 32 he's not going to get any better."
