Dan Evans reacts to surprise Andrey Rublev win
Great Britain's Dan Evans claimed he didn't panic after blowing his first big chance at beating world No. 14 Andrey Rublev.
Evans, ranked at No. 37 in the world, picked up a surprise 6-2 7-6 (9) win over No. 6 seed Rublev in the Dubai quarterfinal.
The Briton failed to serve out for the match in the 10th game of the second set as Rublev managed to force a tie-break.
The Russian had his chances in the tie-break but Evans stayed strong in the key moments as he saved two set points before realizing his third match point to claim a big win.
"It sounds a cliche but it’s stay in there and I knew I’d get my chances," Evans said, via Metro UK. "I’m very happy how I played. Staying calm is key to everyone really. Getting the balance, you can’t be calm and dull, you’ve got to be aggressive with my feet and stay cool as well.
"I’m happy with the variation as well. I’m happy to come through. It probably helped me it was a little breezy."
Evans, who will make his top-30 debut this coming Monday, plays next against either No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
