Fabio Fognini: I am still working on my tennis as I lost some time due to injury
Italian Fabio Fognini says he is looking forward to this week's Dubai Duty Free Men’s Open which he is playing for the first time. Fognini plays Great Britain's Dan Evans in the first round on Tuesday and says he is still working on his game after recovering from ankle and elbow injuries in recent weeks.
Fognini started the year with a loss in the first round of the ASB Classic in Auckland, then reached the fourth round at the Australian Open in January and lost in the first round of the ATP Rotterdam event to Karen Khachanov, where he was hampered by injuries.
According to the Gulf News, Fognini told the media in Dubai, “I’ve only passed via Dubai on my way to Australia. But now after a few days here, I feel the conditions are really good. And if I have to be honest, I am still working on my tennis as I lost some time due to injury. At the moment, I can say that everything is going the perfect way. I’m a little bit sad, of course, about my performance of this month because I get injury when I was starting to feel well after Australia. I had to retire from two tournaments which were really important for me. I’m here without any expectations...The problem that I have is with my legs, but I will try to be ready for my first round. It’s going to be really tough."
The Italian star, who now has 2 children with former US Open champion Flavia Pennetta, is currently ranked No. 11 in the ATP world rankings and is seeded fourth for the event in Dubai.
