Heather Watson: I was just pleased with how well I fought

Brit Heather Watson fought from a set down to outperform CoCo Vandweghe in three sets4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a match lasting for two hours and 31 minutes.

Seeded seventh for the event, Watson spoke about the comeback, saying that she is pleased with the way she played. “I’m very pleased with the match today. CoCo is such a great player,” Watson said. “She’s been a top player for so long, I’ve known her for so long, and I know how well she can play.

“If I’m honest, I didn’t feel like I had much rest. From the Australian Open, I had a week at home, but then I went straight to Fed Cup and was there the whole week. Fed Cup is a very high-stress environment, and I feel like I’m just about recovered to be here now.”

She added, “She’s been out with injury. She had nothing to lose,” Watson assessed. “I don’t think she’s playing at her best yet, but today was extremely tough. It was tough conditions. It’s hot out there, and the ball really gets up high.”

“I was just pleased with how well I fought. I wasn’t necessarily playing my best either, but I stuck in there. I’m just really enjoying being out there, enjoying my tennis.”

Watson is set to face Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round after the Ukrainian beat Danka Kovinic 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-2.
