In-form Gael Monfils reveals the main goals for 2020 season ahead of Dubai

World no. 9 Gael Monfils has won 13 out of 15 matches so far in 2020, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and claiming back-to-back titles in Montpellier and Rotterdam. Leaving indoor tennis behind him, Gael is ready to chase the third straight crown in Dubai, facing Marton Fucsovics in the first round on Monday. Not thinking about consistency or form, the Frenchman is trying to give his best on the practice court and during matches, hoping to stay in the top-10 as long as possible and chase the best-ranking position if he gets a chance.

"I feel good; the conditions are a bit different because we are now back on the outdoor courts. It's a bit faster and the ball is flying a bit more. I have to make some adjustments," Monfils said. "If I can win the first match on Monday, which is the primary goal, then I can maybe think about the third straight title. I don't even think about consistency; I try to work hard every day, trying to be a better player. I seek some goals and try to be next to them or achieve them. That's the most important thing, I think. Win or not, I give my best and enjoy it and see in the big moments how I react.

If I can pull out a great match and beat Marton, then I will be happy. I think he is a great player, someone who we played last year and it was tough to beat him. I feel he is very solid, having a great Australian Open this year. I saw him play in Rotterdam against Roberto Bautista Agut and that too was another solid performance from him. He was a bit unlucky. I expect a tough one. My chances here are the same as everyone else in the field; I think we can all do the damage. I can win, hopefully, and then for the season, the aim will be definitely to try and stay in the top-10 and maybe to achieve a career-high ranking."
