Kim Clijsters Arrives in Dubai for Comeback Tournament

Former World No. 1 Kim Clijsters has arrived in Dubai, ahead of her much anticipated comeback to the tennis circuit next week.

The 36 year old Clijsters has accepted a wild card into the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and will play her first event since the 2012 US Open there.

Towards the end of last year, Clijsters announced that she would be returning to the tennis circuit as she still enjoyed playing and wanted to get back in shape after giving birth to three children. She was scheduled to return at the Australian Open in January but an injury sustained in training forced her to move her comeback to the WTA event in Monterrey in March. However, after hitting with the Belgian Fed Cup team last weekend, Clijsters said she was ready to make a comeback ahead of her schedule and accepted a wild card into Dubai.

The Dubai event has a high quality field - with 6 of the Top 10 players in the world in the draw - including World No. 2 Simona Halep, World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova, World No. 4 Elina Svitolina, World No. 5 Belinda Bencic and World No. 7 Sofia Kenin, who won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this month.

Clijsters was a world No. 1 in both singles and doubles, having held both rankings simultaneously in 2003. She has won a total of six Grand Slam tournament titles, four in singles and two in doubles, so far in her career.

The Belgian has said that she would not play a full schedule and would choose the tournaments she played in based on the schedule of her children and family.
