Famous Italian footballer compares Roger Federer to Andrés Iniesta
Roger Federer is an extraordinary example of longevity and elegance, which has captured the admiration of many athletes even outside of tennis. At almost 39, the Swiss champion is still competitive at the highest levels and has no intention of retiring soon. Former Juventus and Zenit footballer Claudio Marchisio compared Federer to Andrés Iniesta.
"It is inexplicable that Iniesta has not won the Ballon d'Or," said Marchisio in a recent interview to DAZN. "Seeing him play is like seeing Federer in tennis, always a pleasure. He has three brains, one for the right leg, one for the left and one for the head. He knows football perfectly".
Federer will defend his title in Dubai later this month, then play the Masters 1000 of Indian Wells and Miami. Roger will not play any tournament on clay before Roland Garros. “Soon we will have a longer phase without a trip again,” Federer explained. “I am constantly discussing with Mirka how we can find the easiest solution for the children, and mostly that’s the best for my tennis. For some years now we have been able to bring in a little more stability. We try to stay in one place with the family as long as possible. That’s why I skipped the ATP Cup [in Australia] – so we could stay in Dubai longer.”
Federer began his 2020 season at the 2020 Australian Open, where reached the semifinals after straight sets wins over Steve Johnson and Filip Krajinović, a five-set win over John Millman, four-set win over Márton Fucsovics, and a five-set win over Tennys Sandgren (he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets).
