Medvedev: I wouldn't be surprised if Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic...
World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev remains optimistic that someone from the younger generation will make a breakthrough at the Grand Slam level this year but underlines that it will be extremely tough.
The Big Three group -- consisting of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer -- have been absolutely dominant at the Grand Slams for the past several years as there hasn't been a Major champion outside the group since Stan Wawrinka won the 2016 US Open title.
Dominic Thiem, ranked at No. 4 in the world, fell just short of claiming his maiden Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park as now the record eight-time Australian Open Novak Djokovic came from two sets to one down in the final to edge out the Austrian for the main glory.
Many believed that Medvedev, who made nine finals in 2019, could start the new season with a bang and make it all the way at Melbourne Park -- but that didn't happen as the Russian lost to Wawrinka in the round-of-16.
"It is complicated to answer this question. I don’t like to predict the future, but of course it is possible," Medvedev told Marca.
“Anyway, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have many titles in a row and I would not be surprised if they took everything in 2020.
"They are amazing and know what to do at all times. The quality of each ball they send you makes everything very complicated. When you go out to play against them you cannot expect an easy point.
“It is true that it is easier to beat three sets than if the match is the best of five."
