Nightmare continues for Santiago organizers as Borna Coric joins withdrawal list
The Chile Open organizers have suffered another big blow as two-time ATP champion Borna Coric has also withdrawn from Santiago.
World No. 13 Diego Schwartzman and 26th-ranked Guido Pella -- who had been expected to be one of the top favorites to win the inaugural Chile Open -- pulled out of Santiago in the last two days.
2019 Rio Open champion Laslo Djere, former world No. 7 Fernando Verdasco and rising French star Corentin Moutet also withdrew from Santiago.
Coric, a former world No. 12, will turn his focus to the Indian Wells Masters after finishing his campaign at this week's Rio Open.
Following the withdrawal of world No. 32 Coric, a place in the Santiago main draw opened for Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia.
Kovalik, ranked at No. 122 in the world, won't have to play qualifying in back-to-back weeks as a week ago he was beaten in the Rio Open qualifying final round by Federico Coria.
As it stands now, world No. 25 Cristian Garin will be the top-ranked player at the inaugural Chile Open and the No. 1 seed.
