Novak Djokovic: "Skiing runs in my veins"
At the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic won the title for the eighth time and consolidated the absolute record of victories in the first major of the season. On his debut he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets. In the next two rounds he beat Tatsuma Ito and Yoshihito Nishioka both in three sets, reaching the round of 16, where he dominated Diego Schwartzman.
In the quarterfinals he beat Milos Raonic, while in the semifinal he defeated the World number 3 Roger Federer, bringing the number of wins against the Swiss champion to 27. In the last act, Nole beat Dominic Thiem recovering a disadvantage of two sets to one and became the first tennis player in the Open era (the second ever after Ken Rosewall) to win at least one Slam in three different decades ( 2000-2010-2020). Thanks to his triumph in Australia, he regained the leadership in the world ranking after overcoming Rafael Nadal after three months.
Before returning to Dubai, the 17-time Slam champion has been enjoying vacation mode by going skiing at Val Gardena in Italy. The world No.1 filmed himself skiing down one of the mountain’s hundreds of trails, whilst singing. “Skiing, it kind of runs in my veins. I come from a professional skier’s family. My dad used to compete. My uncle, my aunts. For us, it’s kind of normal to be on the slopes. I grew up on the mountain. I think skiing has affected the flexibility I feel of my ankles, my joints" - Djokovic said.
