Injury forces Matteo Berrettini to skip Rio Open
World No. 8 Matteo Berrettini's rough start to the year continues as he the Italian has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming Rio Open due to an injury.
Berrettini, who enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Tour in 2019, was forced him to miss the inaugural ATP Cup because of an abdominal injury.
The Italian started the new season at the Kooyong exhibition, where he beat Australian Marc Polmans before he lost to world No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in his following match at the exhibition.
Berrettini played at the Australian Open but not being at 100 percent took a toll on his performance at Melbourne Park as the Italian suffered a second round loss to American Tennys Sandgren.
"I did everything to recover and be ready to play at the Rio Open. I was super excited to play and go to Rio with my Brazilian grandmother, but unfortunately I still need more days to recover. I wish the tournament a success and see you next year," Berrettini said in a statement posted on the tournament's Twitter account.
