Roger Federer:Fans in Cape Town wanted to see me and Rafael Nadal play proper tennis

Record 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer says the fans in Cape Town wanted to see him and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal play a proper match of tennis.

Federer, ranked at No. 3 in the world, defeated 19-time Grand Slam champion Nadal 6-4 3-6 6-3 in a charity match organized by the Roger Federer Foundation.

The match raised $3.5 million and broke the record for the largest tennis crowd ever as 51,954 people attended the match.

"I think the people wanted to see us play proper tennis and not just be clowns,’ Federer said after the match, per Metro UK. "It was such a privilege to be here tonight. Of course, we wanted to try and play the best tennis we can, that’s what we are world-famous for."

After dropping the second set, former world No. 1 Federer made a perfect start to the third set as he broke Nadal in the opening game.

The Swiss saved a break point in the ninth game of the decider before he converted his first match point to seal the win.
