Steve Johnson: Jack Sock is a fan favorite a lot of places
USA's Steve Johnson says it's great to see fellow compatriot Jack Sock back in action as he claims the 27-year-old is loved everywhere he goes.
Johnson, ranked at No. 76 in the world, overcame former world No. 8 Sock in three sets 6-4 5-7 6-1 to reach the Delray Beach Open quarterfinal.
Sock, who doesn't have a ranking, won only his second ATP match since 2018 November when he beat Radu Albot in the Delray Beach first round.
Johnson, 30, had a successful doubles run with Sock at the 2016 Rio Olympics as the two brought the United States a bronze medal.
"Jack’s a fan favorite a lot of places. It’s great to see him back,” Johnson said of Sock, per the tournament's website. “I thought he played reall good in the second set. I think I just kind of rode a little bit of momentum in the third (set)."
2017 Paris Masters champion Sock still leads the head-to-head against Johnson 5-3 but the 30-year-old has won their last two meetings.
