Two-time Grand Slam Doubles Champion Vania King Announces Retirement
American tennis player Vania King has announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 31. King is best known for winning the 2010 Wimbledon and 2010 US Open women's doubles titles with Kazakh partner Yaroslava Shvedova and has been dealing with injuries of late. She is currently ranked No. 74 in the world in doubles.
In singles, King posted a 269-250 career record, winning 1 WTA singles titles and peaked at No. 50 in the world rankings in November 2006. She reached the third round of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open (twice) in singles and the second round at Wimbledon on two occasions.
But it was in doubles where she excelled, posting a 307-194 record and winning 15 WTA doubles titles and 5 ITF doubles titles. Besides her two Grand Slams in doubles, she also reached the finals of the 2011 US Open doubles event, the semi-finals of the WTA Tour Finals in 2010 and 2011 in doubles and the final of the 2009 French Open mixed doubles event, with Marcelo Melo. She was also part of the US Fed Cup Team from 2006-09 to 2011.
Her most recent tournament was this year's Australian Open where she lost in the first round partnering Christina McHale. King said that she will play Indian Wells and Miami and end her career at the Charleston event, where she will play with Shvedova. She also announced that she will be working in the non-profit sector later, and has set up a charity called 'Serving Up Hope'
