Indian Wells Organizers Issue Statement Related to Coronavirus Outbreak
Tennis - Tournament organizers of the Indian Wells event say that they are taking measures to deal with the outbreak of the coronavirus, which has resulted in the death of 11 people in the United States so far.
The California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a statewide emergency, following similar steps being taken by the states of Washington and Florida. The tournament takes place in Palm Springs, California and some players have already begun arriving at Indian Wells. With this being a Davis Cup weekend on the men's side, some players not competing in the Davis Cup have already started reaching the venue in order to acclimatise themselves to the conditions.
The tournament officials commented to a response from noted tennis journalist Christopher Clarey, who commented, "We are closely watching the developments with the coronavirus. We remain very positive about this year’s BNP Paribas Open and look forward to welcoming everyone to Indian Wells very soon. We are in constant communication with the WTA and ATP Tour, are following the guidelines of the Eisenhower Medical Centre, the Riverside County Health Department and the CDC, and continuing to monitor the situation. We have more than 250 additional hand sanitisers throughout the facility and are proactively working with our staff, volunteers and vendors to review best health practices and protocol. As always our absolute top priority is the health and safety of the athletes, fans and everyone involved with the tournament.”
The tournament starts from March 9 and ends on March 22.
