Marcelo Melo on Indian Wells Cancelation and the Effect on the Ranking System
Brazil's Marcelo Melo says he and some other players are wondering how the cancelation of the Indian Wells tournament will affect the rankings of the players.
The BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells was canceled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Several players have expressed their anger at the tournament organizers for making a last minute decision about the cancelation.
Speaking to the TenisBrasil website, Melo says, “Yesterday we were all taken by surprise here, we were at the club and we had just finished training normally when the news came that the tournament would be canceled. Before there was no warning or anything like that. They confirmed a case of coronavirus nearby and took this decision as a precaution. We players are waiting for what the Miami decision will be like, it looks like they are still talking about it. I will stay here until I have this confirmation whether or not I will have to go Miami. Anyway, there is no panic among the players. The courts of the tournament will remain open for us to continue training, but we don't know how it will work in relation to ranking if there are future cancellations."
Melo and partner Łukasz Kubot reached the final of the Indian Wells event last year, going down to Horacio Zeballos/ Nikola Mektić. They earned 600 ranking points for the same. They also reached the semi-finals of the Miami tournament where they went down to the Bryan Brothers and received 360 ranking points for the same.
Melo and Kubot are both currently ranked tied 5th in the ATP rankings.
