Monterrey: Elina Svitolina and Johanna Konta march into quarter-finals

The top two seeds, Elina Svitolina and Johanna Konta made their way into the quarter-finals in Monterrey on Friday without any fuss.

Playing the day session, the second-seeded Konta was the first to reach the last-eight with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Tatjana Maria in one hour and 47 minutes. On her win, Konta said, “It was an incredibly tough match. [Maria] is very crafty, and very creative on the court, and quite frankly made me uncomfortable today. She plays a game that is very tough to get rhythm against. I’m really pleased I was able to try to play the game, find a way, and basically, be able to work my way through that match.”

Konta will play Anastasia Potapova in the quarter-finals. The Russian, who also played in the day session, defeated Tamara Zidansek, coming from a set down, 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-1 in two hours and four minutes.

In the evening session, Arantxa Rus was the first to reach the quarter-finals. The Dutch player upset 10th seed Lauren Davis 7-5, 6-0 in an hour and 48 minutes. She will play sixth seed, Rebecca Peterson, in the last-eight. Peterson had won her second-round match on Wednesday.

Svitolina, the world no. 7, defeated the 142nd ranked Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-4 in the last match of the day in one hour and 18 minutes. The Ukrainian, who had suffered early exits in Dubai and Doha in the immediately preceding weeks, was not troubled at all in the course of the match. However, she faces a tough quarter-final opponent in the in-form Leylah Fernandez, who last week reached the final in Acapulco.
