Strasbourg Tournament Director: We Will Make A Decision in the Next 15 Days

Denis Naegelen, the Tournament Director of the WTA Strasbourg Internationals to be held from May 16 to 23, says they will take a call about the tournament in the next two weeks.

Speaking to the WeLoveTennis website, Naegelen says, "Every day brings new information . So it's not about panicking. I'm going to have a phone meeting with the WTA and my colleagues from other clay court tournaments. I think the WTA will make a decision in the coming days but the women's tournaments are not in the same situation as the men's circuit. I believe more in a case-by-case option and also depending on the health situation in each country. On our side, we have been working on the different possibilities for three weeks and we will surely make a decision in 15 days."

While the men's ATP Tour has been suspended for the next 6 weeks, the WTA Tour is taking a case by case stance on their events and in some cases waiting for local officials to come out with guidelines to cancel the tournaments.

The latest WTA event to stand canceled is the WTA Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart. There are many concerns that the clay court tournaments in Europe are also likely to be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Internationaux de Strasbourg (formally known as the Strasbourg Grand Prix) is a professional women's tennis tournament held in Strasbourg, France. It is an International-level outdoor event of the WTA Tour played on clay courts. The tournament has been organized in May since it inception in 1987 and serves as a warm-up event to the French Open which is played a week later. Past champions of the tournament include former world number ones Steffi Graf (singles), Jennifer Capriati (singles), Lindsay Davenport (singles and doubles), Maria Sharapova (singles), Martina Navratilova (doubles), and Ash Barty (doubles). The current champion is Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who defeated Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia in three sets.
