Andy Murray suggests prize money could be cut to help lower-ranked players

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray has suggested that prize money could be cut to help lower-ranked players.

The season has been suspended for over a month now and there won't be any events taking place until at least July 13.

High-ranked players should be just fine during the suspension but the fear is that lower-ranked players could face major financial difficulties.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has proposed that top-100 players each donate from 5,000 - 30,000 to support player relief fund.

The money gathered would be distributed to those players most affected by the Tour suspension.

"Sometimes you see the prize money cheque for the winner of the Grand Slams is something like $4 million," Murray told The Daily Mail.

''Could that money be used better and spent elsewhere in the earlier rounds or the qualifying draws or maybe to grow some of the smaller events?"

Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, also suggested he may have already suffered from the coronavirus.

"I was a little bit sick for two or three days about four weeks ago. Before the beginning of quarantine, I was sort of isolating for four or five days.

"It's quite difficult to know whether you have actually had the virus or not. And obviously the test should be saved for people who are in severe situations and frontline NHS workers.''

Murray, 32, hasn't played since he picked up a pelvic injury at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals last November.

The Briton was aiming to potentially make his return at the Miami Masters but then the season got suspended.
