French Tennis Judge Suspended e Fined for Betting on Tennis Matches

French tennis official Anthony Pravettoni has been suspended for eight months and fined $5,000 by the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) for participating in betting.

Three months of the suspension and $4,500 of the fine are suspended on the condition that he commits no further breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP), according to a TIU press release.

On that basis he will serve a five month suspension, effective from 9 April 2020, and pay a fine of $500.

As per the investigation carried out by the TIU between February 24 and August 27, 2019 the French referee made 42 bets on professional tennis matches, in which he did not serve as an official. Tennis officials are not allowed to place any bets on matches as per the guidelines.

As a result of the sanction, Pravettoni is prohibited from officiating or attending any event sanctioned, organized or recognized by the governing bodies of the sport for a period of five months from April 9.

All bets on tennis by officials and other related persons are strictly prohibited as per the TIU guidelines, whose rules say, "No person who covers or is directly or indirectly related to this sport may bet, conspire to bet or attempt to bet on the result or any other aspect of any event or any tennis competition."

The Tennis Integrity Unit is the organisation responsible for investigating match fixing in tennis. It has the ability to impose fines and sanctions, and ban players, umpires, and other tennis officials from participating in tournaments. The organisation is an initiative from the ITF, ATP, WTA, and the four Grand Slam tournaments (the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) and was set up after an investigation into allegations of match fixing in 2008.
