Jamie Murray called a fan to comfort him after Fever-Tree Championships cancellation

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ATP and WTA have cancelled the grass season this year, including the Fever-Tree Championships. The English tournament has been active on social media to comfort its fans after this unexpected bad news, and its most original gesture yet has been a recently-posted video in which we can see Jamie Murray having a phone conversation with a fan.

“Oh blimey, yes fine, Jamie,” answered an impressed John, a fan from London, when he learned that none other than Jamie Murray was calling him. “I’m quite taken aback. I’ve seen you play a few times, but thank you for ringing me.”

“We just wanted to give you a call following the cancellation of the Queen’s tournament,” Murray explained the reason of his call to John. “ I understand you had tickets this year and you’ve been a big supporter of the event the last few years.”

John couldn’t get past his surprise and, after acknowledging that he’s in fact a big supporter of the Fever-Tree Championships, he told Murray about seeing him playing the Davis Cup series against France once.

Then the conversation veered to a more serious topic: When would Jamie play again?

“I don’t know really because obviously they just cancelled the grass court season,” the doublist answered. “And I don’t know when the next tournament is going to be. It’s obviously difficult to prepare for the tournament because we can’t get out on the tennis courts I guess we can try to stay fit at home, but I imagine there’ll be a sort of period of time in between the restrictions getting lifted and then international travel happening again, so there’ll probably be a period there where guys can train and stuff and try to get ready for the tournaments.”

At the end of the call, Murray invited John to come and say hi during next year’s Fever-Tree Championships, and John was “quite honored, really!”
