Novak Djokovic: 'It’s hard to really select the greatest of all time'
Novak Djokovic had long been a very serious candidate for the GOAT of tennis, the acronym for "Greatest Of All Time". He deserves it for the numbers. First of all, the 17 Slams won in his amazing career, which he touched up at the Australian Open taking only two notches from Rafa Nadal and three from Roger Federer's record, with a year ahead of the Spaniard (32 years against 33) and six years compared to the Swiss (who is 38).
A number that, while for the protagonists of the most legendary sport rivalry, it seems more and more definitive, for him it is definitely evolving. As well as the calculation of the 56 great tournaments won, including the 5 ATP Finals and the 34 Masters 1000, in advantage of 2 over the eternal rivals Federer and Nadal.
During a recent live chat with Andy Murray, the World number 1 believes that to be declared the best, a player would have to be good on many levels. However, the chief metric would be to win the most number of Grand Slams. “I think it’s combination of slams, the weeks at number one and obviously the Masters, the 1000 events and the head to head. I think grand slams would probably stand out. But it’s really hard to say, even though I personally and very fortunate that I’m in the conversation, of course, and I’m honored.
But, at the same time, it’s hard to really say greatest of all time taking the amount of slams you want or tournaments you want it whatever. Because I’ve said this to everybody, I’ve had this opinion since forever, I really don’t go into the conversation of comparing generations. I really can’t compare" - the 17 time Grand Slam champion said.
