Rafael Nadal: 'We have lived with very unpleasant news'
Rafael Nadal doubts that tennis in the next few months or maybe years will be like what we have seen so far. According to the Spanish champion, a return to normal is complicated, long and difficult.
The 2020 tennis calendar has been suspended for a long time (with the cancellation of the Wimbledon Championships) but, in any case, it will be difficult to resume soon. Both because the mid-low-range tennis players have seen their entries almost or zero, and because nobody, not even the greatest champions like Nadal are training seriously and have lost tone and endurance.
"I would imagine tennis would be one of the last sports to get back to normality because you’ve obviously got players and coaches and teams coming from all over the world into one area. For a month and a half, we have lived with very unpleasant news. However, the attitude of health personnel has been memorable.
The reality is that it is a pity that the means they needed were not available. We have had a very bad time and we have had to take extreme measures because unfortunately, we do not take adequate preventive measures and now what continues to matter is saving lives,” the former World number 1 explained.
“In the big cities, especially in Madrid, it has been a war. In the Balearic Islands, we are less ill. I am living this period with concern and helping as far as I can from my position,” he added. Spain is one of the worst-hit countries and is one of the major hotspots of the coronavirus pandemic. The country has the world’s highest death toll per capita due to COVID-19.
