Simona Halep: We will talk about tennis when everything returns to normalcy

Simona Halep won her first Major at the French Open in 2018 when she won against Sloane Stephens. Thirteen months later she won the crown at Wimbledon, beating Serena Williams in the final. However, Simona will have to wait until 2021 to defend the title won last year after the 2020 tennis season was suspended until July 13 for the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I will miss seeing the Center Court, the scenes of last year's incredible final. I will miss the grass, a surface that I have now fallen in love with. I will miss wearing white. And I will miss the feeling of belonging that you have at Wimbledon with tradition. Looking on the bright side, I will have the special and rare honor of being the reigning champion for two years," she said.

Halep, who has already donated a large sum of money to help health authorities in Romania, confirmed that she has clear ideas about the pandemic and the resumption of matches: "We are talking about an unprecedented thing. And it is important to continue to reiterate that tennis is absolutely not important compared to what is happening. We have to let the competent authorities do their job. When things return to normal we can start talking about tennis."

In her career, Halep has won 20 titles, including the two aforementioned Majors. At the 2020 Australian Open, Simona reached the semifinal, where she was defeated in straight sets to Garbine Muguruza. At the end of February, she won the Dubai Tennis Championships against Elena Rybakina, after three sets of battle.
