Naomi Osaka is done being shy after encounter with Jay Z

Japan's young tennis sensation Naomi Osaka says she is done being shy and putting limits on herself, after recalling an encounter with the music superstar Jay Z.

In a series of posts on her Twitter account, Osaka spoke about the time she met the rapper Jay Z.

"I was standing next to Jay-Z once and he started talking to me but I got really nervous and started giving one word replies so he suddenly said, “Are you shy?”, and I said, “yeah”, and the convo came to a screeching halt. GOD WHYYYYYYYY 😭😩 WHYYYYYYYY"

Osaka continued saying that  "I’m done being shy. It’s really a waste of my time. I could’ve shared so many ideas by now, I could’ve had convos with so many different people. All the things I could’ve learned 🤦🏽‍♀️ but no I’m over here actually putting my own limiter on myself."

She did caution her followers though that she won't start talking pointlessly just to make conversation. "Pls note : Just because I’m attempting to not be shy doesn’t mean I’ll start pointlessly talking. I’m probably still gonna be relatively quiet but I won’t pass on opportunities to speak my mind anymore."

In an earlier interview, Osaka had also spoken about her shyness. "I mean, in press I feel comfortable because I'm being asked questions. But you know when you have to do small talk, like, 'hello, how are you?', after that, I don't know what to do. I go, 'uhm, okay', then I walk away. But, yeah, I mean, I feel like I'm more comfortable talking to people. I've sort of been put in the position that I have to. It's not something I can avoid any more."

Osaka is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning back-to-back Grand Slam tournaments at the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open. She is the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles.
