Roger Federer Foundation provides $1M to support children in Africa
Established in 2004, the Roger Federer Foundation has helped more than a million of unprivileged kids all over southern Africa and Switzerland, offering them a chance to have a better future through early education. Together with his partners, Roger has given the kids the more optimistic starting point, making sure they stay healthy and enjoy their time in schools. The Roger Federer Foundation is a professionally managed grant foundation, bound to the rules of the Swiss Foundation Code. As a learning institution, the Foundation asks the advice of experts and stakeholders and is a member of SwissFoundations, an association of Swiss grant foundations. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many schools in Africa are closed and the Foundation has taken care of raising $1 million to provide nutritious meals for 64,000 vulnerable children and their families.
The 20-time Major champion has played only one tournament so far in 2020, skipping the ATP Cup and entering the Australian Open where he reached the semi-final. Roger had to dig deep against John Millman and Tennys Sandgren, saving seven match points against the American to find himself in the last four where he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets despite a solid start. In February, the Swiss had to undergo knee surgery, skipping Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami and Roland Garros and planning to make a return in Halle before the coronavirus halted the entire season at least until August.
"COVID-19 is a global health and economic crisis. As a humanitarian response, the Roger Federer Foundation has granted one million USD to provide nutritious meals for 64,000 vulnerable young children and their families through our partners in Africa while schools are closed."
