Soderling Looking at Grooming Leo Borg e Mans Dahlberg for Davis Cup in the Future
Robin Soderling, the Swedish Davis Cup captain, says he is already looking at grooming some of the best Swedish juniors for the Davis Cup in the future.
The former World No. 4 Soderling, who took over as Davis Cup captain at the start of this year, has led the team in one tie so far - a 3-1 victory over Chile at home in March, just prior to the tennis shutdown.
Speaking to Helagotland, Soderling says he loves his job as the captain of the Davis Cup team. "I think it's super fun and love to do this for as long as I get. I find it fun and feel that I have something to contribute. The contract with the union is for two years, but I'm already starting to look at the best juniors to see if they might be ready for the Davis Cup team in three, four or five years."
Soderling is looking at some of the top Swedish juniors like Leo Borg for the Davis Cup team in the future. Borg is making his foray into the senior ranks now and has joined the Rafael Nadal academy recently. "(Leo Borg is) Not for the Davis Cup team as it looks now. Sure, it's a while until November but no, in terms of play he's not there yet to take a place (in the team). But he is definitely one of two, three players who are most likely to be entered into the Davis Cup team within x number of years."
The 35 year old Soderling also has his eye on another Swedish junior Mans Dahlberg. "Mans is a guy who has done really well, an exciting player. He was born the same year as Leo (2003). Obviously, it is important for me to keep a close eye on the best juniors from the age of 17-18 - those who will be the Davis Cup team of the future. When we can start working really well (after corona) the idea is that I should spend quite a bit of time on that too."
The Davis Cup finals are scheduled in Madrid in November as of now, but it remains to be seen when if the tennis circuit will resume this year and what changes might take place to the calendar if the circuit does resume.
