Stan Wawrinka: We never watch Roger Federer and think we can accomplish same

Swiss Stan Wawrinka, 35, says he hopes to play for at least few more years but admits pulling off a Roger Federer and playing until his forties at a high level will be a tough thing to do.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, turned 35 last month but he is still capable of playing tennis at a high level as he is ranked at No. 17 in the world and coming off a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open.

Federer, a record 20-time Grand Slam champion, will turn 39 this coming August but he is still making deep runs at the Grand Slams and contending for the biggest titles.

"If I can be at my best level until 40, it will be amazing. But when we watch Roger Federer, we never say that we can accomplish the same. Anyway, he is an another league," Wawrinka told Alize Lim on Major Talk. "The advantage to seeing him play so well, so late, it means that it is possible to physically hold up. So, in fact, he is opening some doors too, on the mental side too, to imagine that maybe I want to play longer. I am 35 now.”

Wawrinka, a former world No. 3, appeared in only three events this year before the Tour was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In the remaining two tournaments played, the Swiss made the semifinal in Doha and reached the quarterfinal in Acapulco.

The Tour has been since March 12 and there won't be any events taking place until at least mid-July.

Unfortunately, the belief is that the season will get once again extended and the growing fear is that the whole season will eventually get cancelled.
