World No. 152 Arina Rodionova defends Dominic Thiem
Australian world No. 152 Arina Rodionova has come to the defense of world No. 3 Dominic Thiem as she insists the Austrian shouldn't be pressured into supporting the player relief fund.
Recently, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic proposed that top-100 players each donate from $5,000-30,000 on a sliding scale to the player relief.
17-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic proposed that top-5 singles players make the biggest donation and hand out $30,000 to support the lower-ranked players.
Shortly after, back-to-back French Open runner-up Thiem publicly admitted he was opposed to the proposal and added that the lower-ranked players aren't fighting enough to succeed.
Since then, Thiem has received lots of criticism for his comments -- mostly from the lower-ranked players.
"Very unpopular opinion but here we go. I think everyone needs to get off Dominic Thiem’s back about this whole thing of him not wanting to give money to lower ranked players. Regardless of how much he made in his career and this year (everyone keeps counting his money) along," Rodionova said in a Twitter post.
"It's his money and he can do whatever he wants with it. It’s not his fault lower ranked players aren’t making ''enough” money. It’s ITF’s screw up and their job to fix it, he shouldn’t be hated cause he is good at tennis and doesn’t want to share his money with us in my opinion."
