Adria Tour's POSITIVE fall-out: Novak Djokovic joins Grigor Dimitrov, Coric, Troicki

World no. 1 Novak Djokovic has tested positive for Covid-19. The Serbian who flew from Zadar, Croatia to Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday (21st June) after the abrupt cancellation of the Adria Tour, got tested the following day on 22nd June.

After over a day’s worth of wait, the 17-time Slam champion's test results were announced on social media portals on 23rd June.

In his statement following the test result, Djokovic said, “The moment we arrived in Belgrade, we went to be tested. My result is positive, just as Jelena’s, while the results of our children are negative.”

Djokovic, whose conduct in the days immediately preceding of the two Adria Tour legs in Belgrade and Zadar and during the event, and in case of the Belgrade leg – after – had come severe criticism for not respecting the laid-out regulations, also addressed these concerns in his statement. “Everything we did in the past month; we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region… It was all born with a philanthropic idea, to direct all raised funds towards people in need and it warmed my heart to see how everybody strongly responded to this,” he said.

With respect to the prevalence of the virus and the threat it carried, Djokovic had previously downplayed its extent in his native country and in the neighbouring nations where the event was scheduled to be played. In his statement, he subtly acknowledged that he had not erred on the side of caution.

“Unfortunately, this virus is still present, and it is a new reality that we are still learning to cope and live with… I am extremely sorry for each individual case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone’s health situation and that everyone will be fine.”

Novak Djokovic is the fourth Adria Tour participant to have tested positive for Covid-19. Grigor Dimitrov, who played in Belgrade and Zadar, was the first followed by Borna Coric, who played in Zadar. Djokovic’s compatriot Viktor Troicki was the third. Troicki’s wife, who is pregnant with their child, also tested positive for the virus. In addition to these players, a few members of some players' coaching and training staff, too, had tested positive for Covid-19.
